EMDR for Children and Teens
Children
Because a child’s language is centered around play, I combine Child Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) or Theraplay and EMDR together to meet children where they are for processing and reprocessing.
Studies show that EMDR is beneficial for children and teens experiencing distressing symptoms. Much like EMDR for adults, EMDR for younger populations also move through all 8 phases.
Often times, parents will be included in sessions with younger children. Parents will have preparation sessions so that they are regulated and can be used as a resource or co-regulator for their child.
Teens
For adolescents and teens, I incorporate age appropriate play, sand tray, drawing, water paints or other tools that work best for them.
Together, we will explore upsetting thoughts, emotions, and body sensations that cause distress.
We will work to find positive beliefs of self such as “I’m good", “I’m safe now,” “I am loved,” so that healing is met.
